Economy Middle East wrote that UAE and Indonesian officials are discussing a payment corridor that would add central-bank infrastructure to a trade relationship already supported by local-currency settlement agreements, and that Central Bank of the UAE Governor Khaled Mohamed Balama met Indonesian Ambassador Judha Nugraha in Abu Dhabi for talks covering cross-border payments, local-currency transactions and digital financial innovation.

Payment Rails Move Into The Trade Corridor

Payment connectivity is the operational layer behind the diplomatic anniversary.

Officials examined interconnection between UAE and Indonesian payment systems, with the stated aim of making bilateral transactions fast, transparent, efficient and cost-effective for companies and investors.

Balama connected the discussions with the UAE's financial-hub strategy and with secure digital payment solutions for bilateral trade and joint investment.

Nugraha treated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations as an opening for deeper central-bank cooperation, including Local Currency Transactions, cross-border connectivity and continued knowledge exchange.

That puts the current talks on top of earlier central-bank work rather than creating a standalone announcement.

A December 2023 memorandum between CBUAE and Bank Indonesia covered monetary policy, financial stability, payment systems, digital financial innovation, macroprudential policy, Islamic finance, technical capacity building and anti-money-laundering and counter-terrorist-financing regulation.

Local-Currency Settlement Gets A Commercial Base

The May 2024 framework narrowed the cooperation toward settlement.

The two central banks agreed on rules for eligible bilateral transactions using the UAE dirham and the Indonesian rupiah, including importer-exporter payments and support for AED-IDR hedging and liquidity management.

The trade base is large enough to make settlement design commercially relevant.

CBUAE put non-oil trade above AED16 billion in 2023, after the flow became twice as large as it was in 2017.

The wider trade pact adds another reason for payment-system work.

The CEPA record dates the agreement to a July 1, 2022 signing and a September 1, 2023 effective date, and says it gives UAE products wider Indonesian access across above 90 percent of tariff lines and 94 percent of bilateral trade value.

Digital Settlement Experience Widens The Toolkit

Trade momentum has continued since the CEPA took effect.

Economy Middle East cited Foreign Trade Minister Dr. The Thani bin Ahmed Al Zeyoudi as saying in January 2026 that UAE-Indonesia trade rose 12 percent in 2025, creating a larger corridor for any future payment link to serve, according to Balama.

The UAE also has a broader digital-settlement experiment in Project mBridge.

CBUAE helped launch the multi-central-bank digital currency platform for wholesale cross-border payments settled in central-bank money, and used it in January 2024 to complete an AED50 million Digital Dirham payment to China.

The same account described the transfer as the first live-value CBDC cross-border payment from the Middle East and North Africa to an outside jurisdiction on an MVP-ready platform.

The remaining gap is implementation detail: the available account did not give dates for a UAE-Indonesia payment-system link, name participating commercial banks, disclose transaction-volume targets or describe how the two central banks would provide local-currency liquidity once the rails are connected.
