Coinbase Adds x402 Payments For AI Agent Transactions
Coinbase Business users will be able to accept payments from AI agents through x402, while exchange users get live order views and developers get an SDK.

Coinbase Business customers will be able to accept payments from AI agents through the x402 protocol, CoinDesk reported, giving the exchange’s merchant product a payment role in agent-driven transactions rather than only human checkout flows.
The rollout matters because the product separates three jobs that are often bundled together in AI-agent pitches: businesses need to receive payments, exchange users need visibility into agent trading, and developers need a way to add payment acceptance to services without building the rail themselves.
Coinbase Business Adds Agent Payment Acceptance
The Coinbase Business feature is rolling out this week through x402, a protocol developed and incubated by Coinbase.
The merchant-side function lets businesses accept payments initiated by agents, while the user side remains tied to Coinbase accounts and wallets.
Sid Coelho-Prabhu, head of Coinbase Business, said a normal shopping transaction has a buyer with a card or bank account on one side and a merchant point-of-sale system on the other.
In the agent version, the agent can read Coinbase developer documentation, create a wallet and make a payment that a Coinbase Business user can accept.
Exchange Users Get Live Agent Order Views
Coinbase for Agents also adds a live order list for exchange users.
The view streams an agent’s open and active orders in real time, including status, price and size, so a user can track activity, intervene and retain control while an agent is trading.
The rollout examples include natural-language trading conditions, including buying ETH if the market is down more than 1% or converting a percentage of USDC to BTC if volatility spikes.
Those examples show the intended interface, not an independent benchmark of agent trading performance.
Developers Get An x402 SDK
The developer layer is a Coinbase Developer Platform x402 SDK.
CoinDesk put the integration claim at 3 lines of code for adding x402 payment acceptance to any API, MCP server or web service.
The launch combines merchant payment acceptance, exchange-account access and developer tooling for agent transactions.
Coinbase has not yet reported adoption data for the new flow.
Coinbase has not reported merchant use or transaction volume for the agent-payment flow.
